annanotbob2's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For Alice's mother Day 13: Simple (getting metaphysical on my ass) This is another flower that I love (and always grow) for literary reasons, but as so often, I've been getting it wrong for years. Over here (UK), this is a thunbergia, commonly known as black-eyed Susan, which I sought out after reading Alice Walker's "In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens" back in the 80s, but now I discover that American black-eyed Susan's are a completely different plant. Actually, an American commented last time I posted a pic of one, telling me that the name was plain wrong, as if I should round up all the British gardeners and make them agree to a different usage. She wasn't interested in any ideas of language changing across time and/or space, so I imagine she lives with endless disappointment and irritation. 12:44 a.m. - 14.08.12 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
